The History of
MB Rail Consultancy Ltd.

What began as a sole individual working from a bedroom has grown into a limited company with office and meeting rooms in Scotland's Capital.

MBRC has consistently proven that the flexibility and drive that come naturally in a smaller company gets results. With a friendly and open approach to business and client relationships we provide an unparalleled service.

Meet The team

Kevin Tickner

Senior Project Manager
Kevin has over thirty years of project management experiencein a road and rail environment and joins MBRC following a 20-year career with Network Rail.

Kevin has worked on many telecoms, SCADA, signalling and rolling stock projects, more recently he has been involved in rolling stock retro-fitment for both the GSM-R and ETCS programmes.  

Making use of an inclusive management style and by maintaining a clear focus on stakeholder and end-user needs, enables Kevin to build the type of strong relationships needed to deliver challenging projects.

Ken Bott

Principal Consultant, Safety Lead
Ken has over 40 years of experience focussing largely on safety. Having worked on APT, RETB, TPWS, and ETCS Ken has a wealth of knowledge that is rarely beaten.

Ken is the most highly qualified of MBRC with the following to his name: BSc(Hons), CSci, CEng, CPhys, MInstP, FPWI, MIRSE, BSc & MIRO.

Recently focusing on AsBo, CSM-RA and Putting Into Use areas of projects Ken heads up the Safety and Assurance work at MBRC.

Matthew Bott

Director, Engineering Lead
Having gained degrees in Electronic Engineering and Artificial Intelligence, after several years as a sole trader Matt has run MBRC since its creation in 2015.

Through his time with smaller companies and turnkey projects, Matt gained a rounded experience including APIS, PIU, SMS, CMS, Training, Procurement, & Contracts.

Matt has worked as PM on retrofitment projects including GSM-R, NG RETB and ETCS. In recent years he has specialised in Project and Engineering Management.

Steve Wainwright

Principal Consultant, Operations Lead
As a time served operator, Steve has a rich history in operations, management, train driving and ETCS.

Having Chaired the Freight Operator's Forum for a number of years Steve joined MBRC as Ops Specialist and continues to support the ETCS program.





Brendan Cassidy

Engineering Manager
Brendan has 15 years experience in Rail Industry, after starting out on Network Rails Graduate Engineering programme.

He attained BEng Honours in Railway Engineering, specialising in Signalling, and is experienced in Signalling Faulting, Maintenance, and Installation.

He branched out to work for major Signalling contractors on various large installation projects prior to joining MBRC.

Robert Allan

Senior Project Engineer
Rob has 16 years’ experience in Rail Industry, after starting out as an apprentice at the age of 16.

He attained experienced in traction and rolling stock Fault finding,Maintenance, commissioning, Installation, planning, production, and operational excellence.

He has experience in various projects including fleet introduction, and TR&S solutions prior to joining MBRC.

John Thomson

Junior Manager
John is responsible for the management of junior staff and assisting with technical information on the ETCS project.

With 15 years Experience of maintaining rail vehicles John brings a wealth of hands on experience to the team.

Drawing on his previous experience as a team leader with a national freight operator, John is at ease managing the junior staff at MBRC.

Nicole Male

Office Administrator
Having joined MBRC in January 2022 Nicole runs the Edinburgh office handling all aspects from office supplies to interfaces with client commerical departments.

Sean Temple

Graduate Engineer
Combining mechanical experience from the Solar, Medical and Nuclear industries with his BEng(hons) in Mechanical Engineering, Sean brings a wealth of mechanical expertise to MBRC and our clients.

Working as a Graduate Engineer Sean's focus is the support of the Engineering forums within the ETCS project.

Alasdair Mair

Junior Engineer
Following studies in both Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Alasdair went on to work in the distilling industry.

Having developed his people and fault finding skills, Alasdair joined MBRC.

Alasdair works in the ETCS project and is focussed on the review of documentation.

Paul Harriss

Signalling & Operations Adviser
Paul has long standing rail industry experience which includes the part that signalling and control systems play in the operation of the railway system.

He is used to working on multi-disciplinary projects with colleagues of all disciplines, promoting the close involvement of end users onwhom successful, fit-for-purpose operation depends. 

He has contributed to the identification and achievability of railway network capacity and capability proposals, and to the train service, timetable planning and industry change processes.”

Paul Le Vesconte

Operations Adviser and Trainer
Paul is a professional Railway Operations Specialist with 44 years railway experience with 26 years in front line railway operations and management, in both UK passenger and freight operation.  

He has extensive knowledge of the European Train Control System, having been actively involved in the operation design of ERTMS and was a speaker at the Community of European Railways working on the European rules and principles for interoperability.

Paul holds a degree in railway operations and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institution of Railway Operators.

Job satisfaction is providing that missing piece of knowledge, experience or resource a project needs
